FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The opportunities provided through my coursework and observations have enabled me to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the CAPE Standards, as evidenced by the connections below.
IDEA Historical Timeline
CAPE 4a: New administrators engage families in education and school activities and understand the benefits of and regulations pertaining to their involvement.
CAPE 4b: New administrators recognize the range of family and community perspectives and, where appropriate, use facilitation skills to assist individuals and groups in reaching consensus on key issues that affect student learning, safety, and well-being.
Working with families, I attended several IEP meetings. In these meetings, I worked with parents, administrators, students, and, at times, lawyers to reach consensus on key issues affecting their students' learning. The attached project tracks the history of IDEA and the impact of legislation and litigation on students' educational rights. Most importantly, the right to a free and appropriate education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment, with the accommodations necessary to have equitable access to the educational curriculum.
