EXTERNAL CONTEXT AND POLICY
The opportunities provided through my coursework and observations have enabled me to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the CAPE Standards, as evidenced by the connections below.
6a: New administrators are aware of the important role education policy plays in shaping the learning experiences of students, staff, families, and the larger school community.
6b: New administrators understand that they are a spokesperson for the school’s accomplishments and needs
To better understand how educational policy affects the learning experiences of students, staff, and families, I studied the origins of the California cell phone ban legislation and its adoption by local districts. While dictated by the state, districts have been hesitant to institute sweeping policies, preferring instead to defer decisions to school sites. Given the policy's high political and legal consequences, I argue that standardizing practices where possible strengthens buy-in and reduces inequities, even if controversial.
